What is veganism?

Veganism is not using animal products for food or lifestyle.

Why people adopt vegan lifestyles

There are many reasons someone might choose to adopt a vegan lifestyle:

  • animal welfare issues
  • environmental issues directly associated with animal agriculture (such as air pollution and contaminated drainage from factory farming into water supplies) and to help lessen our over consumption of resources including land, water, and fossil fuels
  • Health reasons.

What do vegans eat

  • Fruit:  apples, oranges, berries, mangoes, pineapple, grapes, kiwi, ect
  • Veggies: asparagus, kale, broccoli, carrots,lettuce, turnips, radishes, ect.
  • Nuts and Seeds: almonds, cashews, peanut butter, almond butter, sunflower seeds, ect
  • Grains and Starches: potatoes, pasta, bread, bagels, pitas, wraps, rice, quinoa
  • Beans and Legumes: tofu(its made from soy beans or edamame), edamame, hummus, black beans, chickpeas, lentils
  • Nondairy Milks coconut milk, almond milk, soy milk, rice milk.
  • Chocolate: Dark chocolate
  • Meat Alternatives: tempeh, veggie burgers, Seitan,ect.

Many of the normal foods you eat can be veganized with substitutes.

What is excluded in a vegan lifestyle

Simply, all animal products.  This includes:  meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, eggs, honey, and their by-products.

Animal based products or uses:

  • products tested on animals (cosmetics)
  • animal derived fabrics such as silk or wool (Uggs)
  • leather, down, and fur
  • Circus, rodeo, exhibits

Remember, no one is perfect.  Transitioning to being vegan is something you should take in small steps.
